The Monroe showroom

The Monroe showroom is on South Main Street in downtown Monroe. Out front is a display yard where finished monuments stand in daylight, in the granite colours we actually stock, so you can walk between them instead of scrolling a catalogue. Inside are bronze plates, emblems, lettering styles and the drawings.

You do not need an appointment, and nothing is ordered on a first visit. Most of what we set goes into cemeteries across Union, Anson and Mecklenburg counties. Send us what you need and we will price it, or just call (704) 226-1554.

★★★★★

“The folks at Gaulden were so nice to work with! I would recommend them highly! We wanted something extra special for my Dad’s gravestone and they patiently worked with us on the design until it was just right and we were absolutely thrilled with the end product!”

How it works

From the first visit to the stone in the ground

1

Come in or call

Bring the cemetery name if you have it. Nothing is ordered on the first visit.

2

We check the cemetery

Every cemetery sets its own rules on size, material and foundation. We confirm them before a design is drawn.

3

You approve the drawing

You see the stone with the real names, dates and artwork on it, and nothing is cut until you say yes.

4

We set it

We deliver and set the memorial at the grave, and we come back if anything needs attention.

What it costs

Headstone prices, explained plainly

Size, granite colour and the amount of carving drive the price more than anything else. We keep complete memorials under $1,500 in the showroom as well as work far above that, and we quote the delivered and set price.

See the cost guide →

How long it takes

There is no deadline, and here is why

Most families set a memorial between two and twelve months after a burial. Ground settling, cemetery seasons and family decisions account for most of the wait. The granite work itself takes weeks, not months.

Beyond a headstone

Custom work, benches and private mausoleums

Not every family wants a standard shape. We draw custom monuments from scratch, cut granite benches, build columbarium niches and design private mausoleums. If you can describe it, bring it in and we will draw it.

Common questions

Questions Monroe families ask us

How long after death is a headstone placed?

Most families set a memorial somewhere between two and twelve months after a burial. There is no legal deadline. The usual reasons for waiting are the ground settling over a new grave, a cemetery that only sets stones in certain seasons, and the family deciding together on wording. Granite work itself typically takes several weeks once the design is approved. Read the full answer.

Do you need permission to put a headstone on a grave?

Yes, in two directions. The cemetery has to approve the memorial, because it sets the rules on size, material, colour and foundation. And whoever holds the rights to the plot has to consent. We handle the cemetery side for you and tell you what they will and will not allow before a design is drawn. Read the full answer.

What does a headstone cost in Monroe?

It depends on size, granite colour and how much carving is on it. A flat granite marker sits at the low end, a full upright monument with a base costs more, and a double or custom shape more again. We keep complete memorials under $1,500 in the showroom as well as work well above that. We quote the finished, delivered and set price, not a starting-at number. See the cost guide.

Can you add a date to a stone that is already in the cemetery?

Yes. Adding a second date to an existing memorial is one of the most common things we do. It is cut at the cemetery. Bring or send a photo of the stone and we can tell you what is possible.

Do you deliver to cemeteries outside Monroe?

Yes. From the Monroe showroom we deliver and set across Union, Anson and Mecklenburg counties and well beyond. If the cemetery is further out, ask us. We have showrooms across the Carolinas and the closest one handles it.

Do I have to buy the memorial from the cemetery?

No. A cemetery can set rules about what a memorial may look like. It cannot require you to buy it from them. You are free to buy from an independent monument company and have it set in their cemetery.
